The Brand Category Paradox

A brand-science conversation with Ethan Decker about balancing user delight, buyer trust, category cues, and the identity a young company is trying to earn.

Ethan Decker and I unpack a tension I was actively working through at SkillSaige: the learner wants an experience with personality and play, while the organizational buyer needs to see rigor, safety, and a recognizable business category. Those audiences read many of the same design choices differently.

We use that tension to talk about category signals, the limits of visual differentiation, and why brand decisions are really systems decisions. The goal is not to pick style or credibility, but to build a coherent identity that can carry both.
