The project

During 2017, SurveyGizmo was exploring a move into bespoke hardware for point-of-interest data collection. The concept centered on a modular piece of hardware called the Insights Box.

I served as lead system engineer and hardware concept designer.

One Device, Many Uses

One device, many uses

I designed the core hardware around a Raspberry Pi Zero W with a custom 40-pin HAT extension for power, input, and indicator LEDs.

A stripped-down Linux distribution handled the backend connection and data-gathering services, allowing the system to pull specific surveys for display through HDMI and USB micro.

Point-of-service feedback, simplified

With the Insights Box as the core, I conceptualized several real-world use cases using custom input or display hardware. The same system could adapt to the physical context instead of forcing every customer interaction into one fixed device.

Third-party integration, made easy

The Linux-based hardware was designed for extensibility. Its connection methods made it possible to integrate with other systems, including badge scanners and time-clock hardware, while keeping the survey and feedback experience visible at the point where it was collected.
